With the Sakurao 1st Release Cask Strength, Sakurao Distillery presents its first single malt whisky – a milestone for a distillery with over 100 years of distilling tradition.

The roots of Sakurao date back to 1918, when the company (Chugoku Jozo) was founded in Hiroshima Prefecture. After decades of experience producing sake, shochu, and other spirits, Sakurao began modern whisky production in 2017.

This inaugural release reveals the character of the coastal distillery in its purest form: bottled at cask strength, with a clear structure and the precise signature of Japanese whisky craftsmanship. The Mizunara cask finish adds additional depth and a distinctly Japanese character.

Aroma: Ripe grapes and juicy orange meet dark chocolate, followed by subtle smoky notes, fine oak tones, and an elegant bitterness.

Taste: Powerful and complex. Sweet vanilla and caramel combine with gentle smoke, subtle spice, and a balanced bitterness. Remarkably controlled and precise despite its cask strength.

Finish: Long, dry, and structured. Woody and smoky notes remain present, accompanied by a deep, lingering sweetness.

Color: Rich gold to light amber.

Maturation: Initially matured for several years in a combination of bourbon casks, new American oak barrels, and sherry casks, followed by a finish in Mizunara oak casks, adding depth, structure, and Japanese elegance.
